Heavy Oil Spill Involving a Japan Coast Guard Vessel in Miyagi Prefecture

While a Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel was transferring heavy oil near Shiogama Port in Miyagi Prefecture, more than 1,000 liters of heavy oil spilled because the operator failed to shut off the pump. The oil rapidly spread, contaminating kelp and kombu farming areas in Shiogama City, Shichihama Town, and Rifu Town. As this occurred during the harvest season, approximately 1,500 tons of seafood were discarded due to oil contamination and food safety risks, resulting in severe economic losses for fishermen.
