A Major Threat to the Mediterranean Ecosystem

In the Mediterranean Sea, the Russian oil tanker “Arctic Megaz,” which was previously attacked by a drone, is currently adrift out of control. The vessel is carrying 900 tons of fuel oil and liquefied natural gas. With its hull damaged and the ship listing, it is at risk of running aground and sinking, exploding, or suffering a massive fuel spill at any moment. The European Union has described it as a “ticking environmental time bomb in the Mediterranean.” Should a spill occur, it would severely pollute the waters, posing a massive threat to the marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal environments of multiple nations along the coast.
