Long-term sewage discharge into Lake Windermere in the UK has triggered a severe environmental and public health crisis. Not only has a 7-year-old child fallen critically ill after coming into contact with the lake water, and have numerous residents contracted infections, but the discharge has also led to a massive proliferation of bacteria in the lake, a rapid deterioration of water quality, severe disruption of the lake’s ecological balance, and a threat to the survival of aquatic life. Environmental organizations are calling for the establishment of a real-time pollution monitoring system and urging the government to promptly implement the remediation plan for the discharge of over 50 billion liters of wastewater between 2017 and 2024, in order to curb ongoing ecological damage and health risks.
