An incident occurred in the Alpine oil field area north of Nuiqsut Village, Alaska, USA. The Doyon 26, North America’s largest mobile onshore drilling rig, overturned during transport, spilling approximately 4,000 gallons of diesel and 600 gallons of hydraulic fluid into the local permafrost terrain. The site is adjacent to a tributary of the Colville River. Adverse local weather conditions have hampered cleanup efforts. This spill poses a direct threat to the fragile Arctic ecosystem, potentially endangering wildlife and the living environment of local indigenous communities.
