Chilean study shows heavy metal pollution in Antarctica due to increased tourism

The University of Santiago, Chile, has released photos showing a team of Chilean scientists collaborating with researchers from the Netherlands and Germany to study penguins in Antarctica and determine the presence of heavy metals in the region due to increased tourism. According to the study published in the journal *Nature Sustainability*, Antarctica is showing increasing signs of pollution caused by tourism and scientific activities. In the surveyed areas of the Antarctic Peninsula, the levels of heavy metal pollutants detected are ten times higher than they were 40 years ago.
