As of August 4, 740 wildfires were still burning in Canada, covering more than 22,000 square kilometers, with smoke covering large areas of the eastern U.S. and the New York City Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding the “hazardous” level for the third consecutive day. The fires from the Arctic Circle to southern Ontario have led to air quality warnings from the Northwest Territories in Canada to Quebec, and a synchronized emergency response from Minnesota to Maine in the United States. This is another ecological disaster for the North American continent following the historic 2023 Hill Fire, and scientists note that climate change is causing a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of such events.
