A ro-ro vessel in the port of Suva, Fiji, suddenly capsized and partially sank during towing, resulting in a diesel fuel spill. Although the authorities quickly set up oil booms, the diesel oil still formed a sheen and spread to the surrounding waters. The vessel, which had been moored at the wharf for an extended period of time since 2019, had been used as a dumping ground, and the owner blamed management, saying “the issue should be forwarded to the Fiji Ministry of Transportation and the Port Cooperation Corporation.” The cause of the accident is still under investigation and the ecology of the local waters has been threatened.
