Sakurajima volcano erupts in Japan

On May 22, 2025, at about 9:00 a.m. local time, the Sakurajima Nandake summit caldera in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, erupted, with ash columns as high as 2,000 meters. From 6:30 p.m. on May 21 to the morning of May 22, the caldera had erupted eight times in a row, bringing the cumulative number of eruptions in 2025 to 128. The ash from the eruptions will affect local air quality and jeopardize the health of the population, and may also have a serious impact on the surrounding transportation and agriculture.
