The 83rd session of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83) will take place from 7 to 11 April 2025 at IMO headquarters in London. The meeting will address a number of important topics, including combating climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships, reviewing short-term mitigation measures, and improving ship energy efficiency. In terms of marine pollution, the conference is expected to adopt a 2025 action plan to address marine plastic litter from ships and approve updated groupings of short-, medium- and long-term actions under the plan. Proposals for the designation of the Northeast Atlantic as a control area for emissions of sulfur oxides, particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, as well as the “Nazca Ridge National Protected Area” and the “Grau Tropical Marine National Reserve” in the Pacific Ocean area of South America as Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs), will also be considered. The following are some of the proposals that have been made.
