The German Federal Railways (Deutsche Bahn) is launching a three-year trial in March 2025 to alleviate the environmental pollution caused by the accumulation of bird droppings at a train station in Berlin. Corn kernels coated with the contraceptive “pigeon pills” will be placed around the station to reduce the number of pigeons by controlling their reproduction. The drug has been approved for use in Italy, but needs to be fed every 5-7 days to maintain its effect and ensure that pigeons are temporarily sterile.
