On March 7, 2025, the Maritime Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Maersk announced the inauguration of the world’s first “Zero Carbon Emission” transshipment port, “Port Starlight”. The $6.8 billion port is equipped with a hydrogen-powered loading and unloading system, a building skin powered by chalcogenide photovoltaic panels and vertical windmills, and an intelligent tidal energy management system, which is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by the equivalent of 30,000 fuel cars per year. Meanwhile, the new IMO Carbon Intensity Index (CII) for international shipping has entered the implementation phase, with incoming and outgoing ships required to install carbon monitoring equipment, and those who fail to meet the standard will be taxed.
