Only 39.5% of Surface Water Bodies in EU Achieve “Good Ecological Status”

February 27, 2012 – The latest report on the state of water resources in the European Union (EU) shows that only 39.5 percent of surface waters in the EU are in “good ecological condition” and 26.8 percent are in “good chemical condition”. The report identified the proliferation of the chemical mercury and other toxic pollutants as the main cause of surface water pollution.
