The Dumping of Millions of Tons of Toxic Waste from the U.S. to Canada

An investigation by The Guardian and Quinto Elemento Lab reveals that the United States sends more than one million tons of hazardous waste to other countries every year, with Canada being one of the main destinations. Since 2018, the amount of toxic waste exported from the U.S. has jumped 17 percent. Canada has received 1.4 million tons of hazardous waste in five years, and exports have increased by 25% in that time. In Quebec, residents have found unusually high levels of arsenic in the fingernails of children and adults living near smelters that process electronic waste, and long-term exposure can lead to cancer, neurological disorders, and more.
