UN launches International Year of Glacier Conservation 2025

On 21 January, UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) officially launched the International Year of Glacier Conservation at WMO headquarters in Geneva. 2025 will be marked by a number of activities to raise global awareness of the critical role of glaciers in the climate system and hydrological cycle, and to address the urgent challenge of accelerated glacier melt. In December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 2025 as the International Year of Glacier Conservation and designating March 21st of each year starting in 2025 as World Glacier Day.
