Brazil Saves the Day: Pantanal Wetlands Conservation Spree in Full Swing

In Brazil, the Pantanal Wetlands have suffered from frequent fires and multiple crises caused by human activities. In response, the Brazilian government has taken action, with the state government in which the wetland is located imposing a fine of R$2.89 billion on the owner of a farm for pesticide deforestation, the largest fine ever recorded in the state’s history. The Brazilian federal government has also stepped up its investment in local ecosystem protection by granting special credits of about R$233 million earmarked for disaster relief in the Amazon and Pantanal regions. At the same time, the Brazilian legislature is actively pushing for the Pantanal wetlands to become a national heritage site, which would give them greater legal protection.
