Rainwater runoff has produced toxic leachate, which has already contaminated the topsoil and is spreading into the groundwater aquifers that supply drinking water to nearby villages and towns. If the groundwater becomes contaminated over a large area, remediation could take decades, and the toxins could threaten the ecosystem and residents\u2019 health as they move up the food chain.
