A source-tracing investigation confirmed that a leak occurred in a wastewater storage pond at a nearby chemical plant, causing partially treated industrial wastewater\u2014containing various harmful chemicals and heavy metal residues\u2014to flow through underground drainage channels into a tributary of the Oder River. The toxic wastewater significantly depleted the water\u2019s dissolved oxygen levels while directly poisoning aquatic life such as fish, shrimp, and shellfish.
