Fueled by strong winds, the fire is spreading rapidly, prompting Greek fire authorities to deploy hundreds of firefighters and dozens of firefighting aircraft to combat the blaze. Thick smoke from the blaze has spread northward, blanketing the southern suburbs of Athens. The air is filled with the acrid smell of burning, and concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 have risen sharply for short periods.
