According to disease control and surveillance data, from May through late July of this year, confirmed cases were reported in 45 states across the U.S., with 6,707 laboratory-confirmed cases and over 11,500 suspected cases; the outbreak has already resulted in two deaths. This type of parasite attaches to fresh vegetables via contaminated irrigation water and causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms when consumed by humans.
