Methane gas continues to accumulate deep within the waste pile, causing the fire to flare up repeatedly and making it difficult to extinguish completely. The incomplete combustion of large quantities of plastic and household waste is releasing persistent, highly toxic pollutants such as dioxins, and thick, black toxic smoke is blanketing surrounding residential areas over a wide area. Waste has been stored in the open at the landfill for a long time, causing leachate to continuously seep out and pollute the surrounding soil and groundwater sources.
