Black carbon significantly reduces the albedo of glaciers, causing the ice to absorb more solar heat and directly accelerating the rate of polar glacial melt. Meltwater from the glaciers washes away heavy metals and organic pollutants that have been trapped within the ice for millennia, carrying them into the Arctic Ocean and continuously disrupting the integrity of the polar marine food chain.
