The fishing industry is the economic and livelihood pillar upon which the residents of these island nations depend. According to ocean current simulation and monitoring data, it will take only three years for the various radionuclides generated by the discharge to spread to the coastal waters of South Pacific nations via ocean currents. To prevent radioactive substances from entering the food chain and endangering public health, these island nations have simultaneously and significantly raised their routine radiation testing standards for seafood caught in coastal waters. Representatives from the island nations pointed out that the Pacific Ocean\u2019s ecological connectivity knows no borders; the effects of nuclear contamination will affect all marine life and coastal residents across the region.
