An oil slick stretching about 7 kilometers formed on the river\u2019s surface, with the pollution zone extending into the Persian Gulf; petroleum substance levels in the river exceeded safety standards by 40 times. As a result of the crude oil seepage, large swathes of farmland soil have been contaminated and crops have withered; the river\u2019s ecosystem has been completely destroyed, with fish and shrimp disappearing entirely, and the water emitting a pungent, foul odor.
