{"id":266,"date":"2024-08-19T05:41:09","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T21:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenearth.icu\/?p=266"},"modified":"2024-08-19T05:41:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-18T21:41:09","slug":"anti-sewage-campaign-turns-city-square-into-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.greenearth.icu\/index.php\/2024\/08\/19\/anti-sewage-campaign-turns-city-square-into-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-sewage campaign turns city square into beach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Hull square has been transformed into a mock beach as part of an anti-pollution campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hull and East Riding Friends of the Earth (HERFOE) has set up a bathing spot in Queen Victoria Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign group said it wanted to raise awareness of sewage discharges &#8220;affecting top local bathing spots&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yorkshire Water said it took its &#8220;responsibility to protect the environment very seriously&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lauren Saunders from HERFOE said last year saw &#8220;the worst sewage spills on record&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn doing nothing, the government and regulators are letting water companies leave our seas in such a state that many will think twice about swimming at what used to be pristine East Yorkshire beaches.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Environment Agency, in Yorkshire there was 0.5 million hours of sewage spills in 2023 \u2013 making up around 14% of the country\u2019s total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5ykkxppr72o\">Ofwat said it was planning to fine Yorkshire Water \u00a347m<\/a>&nbsp;over past sewage spills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry regulator&#8217;s chief executive, David Black, said that an Ofwat investigation had &#8220;uncovered a catalogue of failure&#8221; on how the utility firm ran its sewage works and this &#8220;resulted in excessive spills&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/0053\/live\/b23f89a0-5c8c-11ef-b43e-6916dcba5cbf.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Aerial view of Bridlington South Beach with the tide out and houses in the foreground\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yorkshire Water said it was investing \u00a3180m to cut discharges from storm overflows<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yorkshire Water said it was &#8220;disappointed&#8221; at the proposed fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The firm had previously apologised &#8220;for not acting quickly enough&#8221; as well as announcing a \u00a3180m plan to cut discharges from storm overflows by April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Follow BBC East Yorkshire on&nbsp;<\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bbclincolnshire\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook<\/a>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCRadioLincs\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X (formerly Twitter)<\/a>,<em>&nbsp;and<\/em>&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bbclincs\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a><em>.
